Began at Teachwell:
I like the smaller class size and the fact that I am faced with a challenge every day. Every day truly is an adventure!
What was your favorite subject in school?
I didn’t really have a favorite subject in school. School came hard to me due to a learning disability so I dreaded the daily grind of what school was. I did, however, have a favorite teacher who took notice, and tried to crack me. He pushed me and demanded me best. That was new to me, other teachers accepted my mediocre work and that was that. This teacher inspired me and gave me a drive to do better.
How do you hope to make a difference?
I desire to make my students feel valuable, respected, safe and set apart.
What is your background experience – degrees, experience, skills?
My path to teacher was a strange one. I grew up on a farm in NW Iowa. I loved exploring the outdoors, doing chores with my father, tinkering on farm equipment and other things with motors, and most of all interacting with all of the various animals on our farm.
Pursuing my interest in all things cars, I received an associate’s degree in automotive technology immediately out of high school. I worked in that area for about a year and realized it wasn’t for me in the grand scheme of things.
On a whim I got a job at an animal shelter and worked there for a good three years, then I put in a year at the Great Plains Zoo and finally I landed a job working as a veterinary assistant where I fell in love with science.
This led me back to school at SDSU where I received a BS in Biology and my secondary teaching certification.
What is one thing you'd like people to know about you?
I’m a reptile enthusiast! Or that I have an Associate’s degree in Automotive Technology
