While school gives students with developmental disabilities some of the necessary knowledge and social skills required to live independently, many need real-world job skills to truly succeed. This is why Teachwell Transitions was created. This positive, supportive program helps qualifying young adults ages 18-21 gain the extra skills they need for employment and independent living.
The program takes place in Sioux Falls at the Teachwell Transitions site at 715 E 14th St between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Local school districts may provide transportation to and from the site.
Jobs and job training: We help students discover their potential through career interest and aptitude assessments, job seeking and keeping skills and job placement and support.
Community participation: Students learn to function independently in society thanks to a comprehensive training program that teaches them how to use public transportation, read maps and navigate the city. They also learn about public assistance, civic involvement and how to be involved in chosen leisure and recreational activities.
Home living: Living independently starts in the home. We teach students about household management, budgeting and personal finances and the purchasing and care of personal items. Along with this students learn skills that involve health and safety, shopping and food preparation.
Education: Taking academics to a “street-smart” level, we take basic academic skills and transfer those into self-determination and advocacy, problem solving/decision making, interpersonal/communication skills and functional academic skills
