Dawn Howland

Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant

Began at Teachwell:

 2024

Why did you choose this field?

My youngest son has systemic JIA and I had the opportunity to see his physical therapy sessions. After visiting the college and seeing the PT area versus the OT area, I decided OT was a much better fit. OT has been an awesome match and a great career choice after raising and homeschooling five boys.

What did you think you were going to be when you grew up?

A mom! I also thought I might be a special education teacher until a career guide form in high school told me I should do accounting!

What or who most inspires you?

God’s Word- it has carried me through every hardship and gives me hope to carry on, do my best, and reflect truth in love.

Why Teachwell?

I love the school district that I had previously worked in and Teachwell provided me the opportunity to continue working in the same district.

What are you proudest of?

Taking the first step into the college. By the grace of God, I completed that first interview, finished college and followed His calling to South Dakota not knowing how it would turn out. The decision to obey impacted others to follow as well. But I give all that glory to God. May He be pleased with what I have done. I am thankful I did it.

How do you hope to make a difference?

By being obedient to my calling, practicing with integrity, and demonstrating compassion. We learn by example whether good or bad- I hope to be a good example!

What lessons has your work life taught you?

There is not nearly enough space to list! A big one that has been confirmed repeatedly is of individual autonomy. You can not force anyone to choose the right decision- but a good understanding and use of cognitive behavioral therapy can go a long way in transforming lives of all ages.

What is your background? Experience, degrees, skills, etc.?

I got my Associates at Brown Mackie College in Indiana in 2015. I have worked in a rural setting and have done Long term care, inpatient, outpatient, home health and schools. Sometimes all in the same week!

People would be surprised to know that I . . .

Am a second degree black belt in taekwondo.
