Duncan Raney

Science Teacher

Began at Teachwell:

 2024

Why did you choose this field?

I can think of no better way to contribute to the future

What did you think you were going to be when you grew up?

A park ranger

What or who most inspires you?

Adam Savage and Shannon Frewaldt, not necessarily in that order.

Why Teachwell?

The opportunity to work at Teachwell was an unexpected blessing. The Teachwell team and the Teachwell mission are perfect matches for me.

What are you proudest of?

My education

How do you hope to make a difference?

It is my aim to steer any number of kids clear of the pit trap that is believing they're dumb. I've observed that believing oneself to be "not smart enough" can be a life-changing, opportunity destroying affliction, and I will do what I can to catch it and quash it before it does any of my students real harm.

What lessons has your work life taught you?

Truly, preparedness is a state of mind. No amount of preparing makes you "prepared enough" unless you can improvise.

What is your background? Experience, degrees, skills, etc.?

I'm a sculptor and a blacksmith, inaugural winner of the Carol Hepper Award for Studio Art, I've got a double major in sculpture and art education with two sub certificates (art history and printmaking) through SDSU, and I study and practice historical archery in my spare time.

People would be surprised to know that I . . .
