Kelcey Smith, OTD, OTR/L

Occupational Therapist

Began at Teachwell:

 2025

Why did you choose this field?

I first learned about occupational therapy in middle school, and the idea stuck with me. When it resurfaced in college, I realized how much I loved the idea of helping people in creative ways. OT is never “one size fits all” and everyone has different goals, so every day looks a little different. I enjoy helping children and adults discover what works for them and seeing them succeed.

What did you think you were going to be when you grew up?

A teacher and a mom… so I guess you could say I hit both of those marks! In a way, being an OT is teaching and I’m blessed with three great children!

What or who most inspires you?

My children. They see the world through a lens that’s curious, honest, and refreshingly creative and it challenges me to do the same.

Why Teachwell?

Two of my dearest friends work for Teachwell and have been singing Teachwell’s praises for years. They’ve shared how much they love their work, the relationships they’ve built, and the balance they’ve found. When people you trust feel appreciated and successful, you pay attention. Plus, how fun is it to work alongside your friends?

What are you proudest of?

My family, hands down! They’re my greatest adventure and my best accomplishment.

How do you hope to make a difference?

I want every student I work with to feel supported and successful in school, a place where they should feel safe, capable, and valued. My hope is to help them discover their own strengths and believe in themselves.

What lessons has your work life taught you?

That work is a lot more fun (and productive) when you have solid relationships built on trust and great communication. And that clear boundaries and expectations aren’t just helpful, they’re essential.

What is your background? Experience, degrees, skills, etc.?

I went to undergrad at University of Sioux Falls (go Coo!) and attended Creighton University for my Doctorate of Occupational Therapy. I graduated in 2014 and shortly after that, I started at a rural outpatient facility. I quickly saw a need for a pediatric program and worked with local providers to provide OT to local children. I then spent a few years working in a few smaller school districts before taking a therapy management position in a local nursing home. I’m excited to head back to my roots in pediatrics to make a difference in the next generation!

People would be surprised to know that I . . .

Love making sourdough bread! What started as a little hobby a few years ago has turned into a fun pastime… and my family refuses to eat any other bread now!
