Why did you choose this field?

I actually did not have this field on my radar until I was eating dinner at my aunt's house one night during a break in between my sophomore and junior year of college. My cousin was inquiring about my major, which, I think was general communications, and why I wanted to go into that field. I don't know what exactly I said but she said... Why don't you look into Speech Pathology, that sounds like it would fit better into what you are looking for than your current major. I looked into it and declared a new major within a few days of that dinner.

What or who most inspires you?

This might come off as cheesy, but my students inspire me. The adversity so many of them face—not only because of their disabilities, but often in their home lives and within their communities—is humbling. Watching them continue to show up, work hard, and find their voice despite things that would be difficult for anyone reminds me how much strength can exist in such young people.

Why Teachwell?

I had heard so many good things about Teachwell from people who work here, so making the switch felt like an easy decision. Since starting, I’ve felt supported, appreciated, and really glad to be part of the team.

What are you proudest of?

I am proud of the relationships I have built with my students in the past and will continue to build moving forward. I think that I do a good job of relating to them, speaking with them about hard topics, and that they know I am someone that is in their corner and a safe adult they can talk to.

What lessons has your work life taught you?

My work has taught me to give people grace and to remember that there is usually more going on than what we see on the surface. A behavior, a bad day, or even silence can be connected to something much bigger. It has made me slower to judge and more willing to look for the why behind what someone is doing.

What is your background? Experience, degrees, skills, etc.?

This is my 10th year working as an SLP. I started off working in skilled nursing facilities but have been working in schools since 2018. I got my B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from California State University - Sacramento and my M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from University of South Dakota.
