Roberta Ruud

Fine Arts Teacher

Began at Teachwell:

 2012 and 2023

Why did you choose this field?

I think art is very important for at risk youth. I believe art gives students a safe and positive way to express themselves. Many of these students need a space where they can feel successful, build confidence, and develop healthy ways to cope. Art provides both structure and freedom, helping them learn responsibility, problem-solving, and self-control. I want my classroom to be a consistent, respectful environment where students can grow both creatively and personally.

What or who most inspires you?

I am inspired by creativity in all forms.

Why Teachwell?

I enjoy working with students in a smaller class setting. I love that the small class size allows me to spend time with each student and get to know each student.

What keeps you motivated?

Seeing success happen around me.

What was your favorite subject in school?

I was interested in political science almost as much as I was interested in art.

Goals for the future?

I would like to continue to help students find success through creativity and continue to have my own personal creative success.

What is your background? Experience, degrees, skills, etc.?

I have a BA in Art from Augustana University and a BA in Art Education from the University of Sioux Falls. I have worked in alternative education since 2008.

People would be surprised to know that I . . .

love dogs and use my teaching ability to train dogs for complete off leash obedience.
