Why did you choose this field?
I'll be cliche and say I didn't choose teaching; teaching chose me! My initial major was Environmental Science with a minor in History. That then transformed into Social Science Education by my second year in college, and I haven't looked back. My goal wasn't always to become a teacher, but I knew I always wanted to do something that could help a lot of people. After thinking about some of the most influential figures in my life, the common denominators were teachers. After my first taste of student teaching my Junior year, I was hooked and I haven't looked back.
What did you think you were going to be when you grew up?
A professional athlete of some kind. Growing up around my family, who are die-hard Wisconsin sports fans, I couldn't help but hope I'd play for the Packers or Milwaukee Bucks one day.
What or who most inspires you?
My Dad. He taught me that every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and that hard times create stronger people. He's worked for the betterment of the public most of his adult life between running a homeless shelter and being a police officer. Never fails to answer the phone or meet up for a coffee. Stepped up for my family when my mom passed away. Far and away, my Dad is the one that keeps me going.
Why Teachwell?
I believe that each kid should have a fair shot at a quality education, regardless of their situation. Teachwell shares that vision, and I'm happy to embody that belief.
What are you proudest of?
The relationships I built with my students last spring. I see them out and about doing their thing, and they always give me a wave, which I do not take for granted. I continue to root for their success every day and wish them only the best.
How do you hope to make a difference?
I hope to make a difference by leveraging my personal experiences to help my students mold their own unique path and to help them discover things they care about. Whatever path that may be, I hope that I can motivate them to make their wildest dreams a reality.
What lessons has your work life taught you?
Give yourself some grace, treat everyone with respect, and never burn a bridge. Maintaining good relationships with the people you meet and interact with might end up helping you when you least expect it.
What is your background? Experience, degrees, skills, etc.?
I conducted my K-12 schooling in Brandon, South Dakota, where I graduated in 2020. I went on to attend Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, where I graduated in the Spring of 2024 with a degree in Social Science Education. I conducted my student teaching at my alma mater, Brandon Valley High School, last spring, teaching US Government and Geography, which I consider the most rewarding experience of my life up to this point.
